All interventions in Safe Node Areas are driven by a Community Action Plan developed in conjunction with the local community.
Lotus Park is an informal settlement next to Nyanga Junction railway station, it has 220 dwelling units per hectare. The area is faced with the challenge of lack of basic services, which led to a protest in 2009-2010. Due to difficulties in resolving the resident’s issues, VPUU became involved as a development agency/intermediary as of end of 2010. VPUU engaged all the community stakeholders to present their aims and processes, a decision was reached during a community general meeting to partner with VPUU.
A process of negotiation for taking down some barriers and individual disagreements between leaders took place and VPUU mediated the process. The outcomes did not reach VPUUs requirements and that led to the formation of the Safe Node Are Committee (SNAC). The SNAC hold regular meetings discussing various elements of the development processes, the aim is to provide a safe space to express opinions and improve the leadership styles.
